From an Employee to a Business Owner
Created By: Putman, Laura On Tue, Mar 09, 2010 06:43 AM
What do you know about owning a business, I thought.  Where do I draw upon for all of the challenges of running a business of my own?  There are taxes and forms and major responsibilities, how will I start?  Then I sat down and thought about it in detail.  I started to recall all of the jobs that I had and what I did.  Slowly, but surely it dawned on me that I knew how to run my own business, I had been doing it as an administrative professional for over 20 years! Now all I had to do was to recognize my own power and ability to become a business owner.

I realized that more then anyone else, administrative professionals are so talented, diverse and have become experts in their field and without knowing it, are capable of owning their own business.  As we progress through our career in the field of administration we are open and willing to learn and become more educated.  How many managers and senior level officers take as many educational courses and pursue areas outside of their comfort zone then administrative professionals do?  From first hand experience, I can say not many.  We don't know our own strength and abilities until we actually recognize our own level of experience and how open and courageous we are to take on something we never dreamed would be a part of our skill set when we started our career.   The dedication and pursuit of becoming more is always a part of our journey, we are to be applauded for that and so much more.

Consider this.  When you started your career, did you ever dream that you would be where you are now?  Do you think that you are capable of more?  What do you find in yourself that you haven't done yet?  Try it and have fun doing it.  I love what I do, and am very good at it, but I am always searching for ways to improve or add to my skill set.  I love my profession and the number of talented and hard working people that I have met along the way.

We, as administrative professionals, have the ability to be more if we put our mind in the right place.  Never stop trying and believing in who you are and what you contribute.  Without you there would be chaos and so many things would not be done.  We are all talented in a variety of areas and so willing to share our knowledge with others.

I am a member of a virtual assistant networking group and see the same behavior and level of professionalism as a business owner that I did as an employee.  It is gratifying knowing that I have guidance and a comrade in arms, no matter what path I take.  We are a mighty group!
